The Cardigan and Pembroke Welsh Corgis are very similar breeds but do have a few key differences that help distinguish the two.

One of the many breed characteristics that differentiate Cardigans from Pembroke’s is color. Pembroke’s colors are red and white, sable, and tri. Cardigan’s colors are red and white, sable, black and white, blue merle, and brindle.

One of the most significant physical differences between the Pembroke and Cardigan Corgi is their tail. The Pembroke has a bobbed tail wish is a short nub, very different from the Cardigan’s long fluffy tail. Along with a longer tail the Cardigan also has a larger build than the Pembroke.

Another difference between these two breeds is the shape of their ears. At first glance their ears may look similar, but the Cardigan’s ears are more rounded while the Pembroke’s ears are erect and pointed.

If you have been looking into getting a dog it is important to know what it takes to care for them daily. There is a lot of general information you need to know for taking care of a new puppy, but here is what a daily care schedule will consist of:

Morning Wake Up 8AM

Your dog will adjust to your sleep schedule, especially if they sleep in your bedroom.

Just like when you wake up, your puppy will need to relieve themselves and stretch. Take your puppy out for a quick walk. Morning walks are important to establishing a solid routine and is especially important for younger dogs. Bring a ball or small toy along on walks for a quick game of fetch.

Corgis are active breeds, but their body type is prone to obesity. It is important they get adequate daily exercise to reduce the risk of becoming overweight.

After a walk it is time for breakfast! Your dog’s typical meal will depend on their age and weight.

After eating your fog may need to go outside again. Check for bathroom signs like standing at the door, pacing, and whining.

Afternoon 12PM

After a second bathroom break, now is a good time for a nap/ down time. If you are going to work, be sure to leave water and food for them. Carefully measure the food to be sure you are putting out the right amount.

Cardigan & Pembroke Welsh Corgis are well- known for their extensive shedding.

Because corgis naturally have a double coat of fur, they tend to shed at a much higher rate than breeds that do not have a double coat.

A double coat is two separate layers of fur, with a thicker shorter underlayer, and a longer top layer.

Corgis coats adapt to the change in seasons. During colder months around fall and winter their undercoat will grow thicker to help protect from the cold. Corgis shed this thicker hair during the spring.

Typically, Corgis shed year-round but most intensely during spring and autumn. Because both this it is best to regular schedule grooming appointments. If you own a corgi or a dog with a double coat, it is important to have a good grooming brush.

Use a metal comb with wide spaced teeth and start at the top of your dog’s hair. Be sur to brush the hair backwards in a downward motion so that all the loose hair will come out of your dog’s coat. While you are brushing their hair be sure to check your dog’s skin for any irritation, bald spots, or redness. This should be routine to check their coat to ensure your dog’s overall health.

Regular Grooming

Your corgi should be groomed regularly to maintain their coat and overall health. It is best to establish a regular grooming routine with a professional.

Corgi Ear Taping 101

Corgi pups are born with large floppy ears that fold down. As they mature, their ears will begin to rise and stand upright. Growing puppies may need a little help with getting their ears to raise, which is why many pups have to have their ears taped. Taping also helps to increase circulation through the ears.

The AKC states that uprighted ears for Corgis is the breed standard. It can take anywhere from 8-24 weeks for Corgis to have fully developed upright ears.

Here is how to tape Corgi ears:

Be sure to use masking tape to avoid adhesive getting stuck to your Corgi’s fur or potentially hurting their ears.

Using 2-inch wide masking tape, lift your Corgi’s ears and begin taping around the base of their ear and slowly taping them upwards until the ear is standing completely upright. Make sure there are no folds in the ear while taping.

Repeat this on the second ear.

After taping both ears, you may want to reinforce the ears with the tape going across their ears. This is optional but can help ensure that the tape holds, and the ears remain upright. Simply take a longer piece of tape and put a band of tape in the front and back of their ears.

The tape can be left on for a week. After seven days, remove the tape and allow the ears to rest. If the ears are still drooping, you can repeat this process until they are standing upright.
